Three Killed, One Wounded in Separate Hyde Park Shootings Thursday Night

Three people were killed and a fourth was wounded in two separate shootings in Hyde Park Thursday night, Chicago police said, as two more men were shot in nearby South Shore within hours of each other.

The first shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. along the Midway Plaisance. A 27-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were found dead inside a car in the 5900 block of South Ellis Avenue, each shot once in the head, police said. Officers recovered a weapon at the scene. Both victims were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

About 11 p.m., a second shooting struck near Promontory Point. A 25-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were sitting in a parked car in the 5400 block of South Shore Drive when someone in another vehicle opened fire, shooting into their car multiple times, police said. The man was hit in the stomach and pronounced dead at University of Chicago Medical Center. The woman was shot in her right shoulder and was listed in fair condition at the same hospital.

Police have not announced any arrests in either shooting and have not released information on a motive or suspects. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.

In South Shore, two more people were shot in incidents about two hours and two blocks apart. Around 8 p.m., a 67-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the leg in the 6700 block of South Cornell Avenue, according to a preliminary police account. Then around 10:15 p.m., a 36-year-old man was shot in the leg while sitting in his parked car in the 6900 block of South Cornell Avenue. That man drove himself to University of Chicago Medical Center and was listed in good condition.

In all, five people were shot across four separate incidents on the South Side Thursday night, three of them fatally. The shootings occurred within about two miles of each other, from the Midway Plaisance through Hyde Park and into South Shore, over roughly six hours between early evening and late night.

Hyde Park is home to the University of Chicago and Promontory Point, a lakefront gathering spot along the shore. The Midway Plaisance, where the first shooting occurred, is a park-like boulevard that runs through the University of Chicago campus.

Police have not said whether any of the four shootings are connected. Detectives are reviewing evidence from each scene, including the weapon recovered near South Ellis Avenue, as they work to identify suspects.
