Oak Park Teen Charged with Murder in Fatal Divvy Bike Shooting at Grant Park
A night ride through one of Chicago's most iconic public spaces ended in tragedy this week when a 27-year-old man was shot and killed while pedaling a Divvy bike through Grant Park — and now an 18-year-old from Oak Park is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the killing.
The Shooting
Just after midnight on Tuesday, Malik Jones was riding a blue Divvy bikeshare bike along the sidewalk on the 300 block of East Jackson Boulevard when he was struck by gunfire in the upper leg. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but did not survive. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The Divvy bike Jones had been riding remained at the scene for hours afterward, surrounded by evidence markers, as investigators worked to piece together what happened in the heart of the city's lakefront park district.
The Arrest
Detectives moved quickly. By Tuesday evening, police had arrested Eliel Argudo-Tenorio at his home in Oak Park. The 18-year-old was charged with one count of first-degree murder and was scheduled to appear in court for a detention hearing on Friday.
A Troubling Location
Grant Park — home to Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, and countless summer festivals — draws millions of visitors each year and is widely considered a centerpiece of Chicago's public life. A fatal shooting in the park in the early morning hours raises fresh concerns about safety in spaces that residents and tourists alike rely on throughout the warmer months.
As the case moves into the courts, Chicagoans will be watching closely — both for justice for Malik Jones and for answers about what led to his death on what should have been an ordinary night ride through the city.
