Man Dies After Being Pulled from Lake Michigan at Montrose Harbor
A man is dead after jumping into Lake Michigan at Montrose Harbor on Friday afternoon and failing to resurface, Chicago police said.
At approximately 4:22 p.m., marine unit personnel responded to the 4500 block of North Simonds Drive following a marine distress call. Authorities said the man entered the water at Montrose Harbor and did not come back up. Rescue crews arrived on scene and pulled the victim from the lake.
The man was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. As of Friday evening, his identity had not been released.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers Lake Michigan poses, even during the summer months. Strong currents, cold water temperatures beneath the surface, and unpredictable conditions make the lake hazardous for swimmers and anyone who enters unplanned. Chicago officials and water safety advocates regularly urge the public to swim only in designated areas and to exercise caution near the shoreline.
